Vestito completamente in nero , con un widow's copricapo e gioielli semplici , marie de medici è interpretata come la regina madre , dopo aver governato la francia come reggente di 1610 per 1617 . Come uno di Rubens' patroni più eccezionali , la regina gli commissionò di decorare il suo palazzo del lussemburgo a parigi con una serie di opere che glorificavano la sua figura e quella di suo marito , henri iv . Rubens ha iniziato il lavoro attuale con questo scopo in mente , ma è stato lasciato incompiuto , come si può vedere sullo sfondo impreciso .
